Letter from General Prioress – Saint Dominic 2020

Dear Sisters:

            We are close to celebrating the feast of Our Father St. Dominic, a compassionate man, who desired to be a response of mercy to the world.

            Blessed Jordan of Saxony offers us a beautiful description of the Saint, “inflamed with the zeal of God and supernatural ardor, possessing a limitless charity and the fervor of a vehement spirit”. He precisely highlights this fundamental trait of St. Dominic: he spoke with God or about God.  In the saints’ lives the love for God and neighbor always go together.

            In St. Dominic, three qualities stand out that have always caught the attention of his companions and that are more necessary than ever today: JOY, REALISM and COMPASSION. But I would like to particularly share with you COMPASSION, given the situation in which we find ourselves as humanity in these times of pandemic.

            St. Dominic, from his childhood grew in compassion, so much so that he interiorized in himself the miseries of others. He had a great love for the poor and needy, seeing the presence of Christ in each one of them. We all know very well the great famine that occurred in Palencia, when he was a student there. He deeply sympathized with the poor and gave them everything he had, including what he cherished the most, his books. More dramatic is that other scene in his life where he thought of selling himself as a slave, when he no longer had anything else to sell. For all this he suffered misunderstanding and criticism, to which he replied with kindness and peace: “Christ should not suffer hunger in the poor while I keep something in my house with which I can help them.” In truth we can say that Dominic was poor with the poor and for the poor. This is a trait that surely challenges our life.  Along with us nowadays, there is also the poverty of so many people and families, who, due to the current economic situation, are having a really hard time. Do these situations challenge our sensitivity, our solidarity and our charity? I think it should be an urgent call to detach ourselves from what we have to share with those most in need. 

            We are seeing how the world today, as a result of this pandemic, is in need of mercy and compassion in all its senses. The painful urgencies of many people make our compassion necessary, thereby implying a real commitment to all our suffering brothers, in order to walk towards an increasing solidarity in the world.

            Sisters, as Dominicans, we are called to strive to achieve a more humane and fraternal world. Let us look at the model of the first Christian community, how it was built on prayer, the reading of the Scriptures, the breaking of the bread and the sharing of everyone’s goods, so as not to abandon anyone in need (cf. Acts, 2, 42-45). Let us ask the Lord to increase our FAITH, to strengthen our HOPE and thus increase our CHARITY.

Carta de la Priora General – Santo Domingo 2020

Muy queridas hermanas:

            Estamos ya próximas a celebrar la fiesta de Ntro. Padre Santo Domingo de Guzmán, hombre compasivo, que quería ser una respuesta de misericordia para el mundo.

            El beato Jordán de Sajonia, nos ofrece una bella descripción del Santo “inflamado, del celo de Dios y de ardor sobrenatural, poseía una caridad sin límites y un fervor de espíritu vehemente”.  Se subraya precisamente este rasgo fundamental de Santo Domingo:  hablaba siempre con Dios o de Dios.  En la vida de los santos van siempre juntos el amor a Dios y al prójimo.

            En Santo Domingo sobresalen tres cualidades que siempre llamaron la atención de sus compañeros y que hoy son mas necesarias que nunca: la ALEGRÍA, el REALISMO y la COMPASIÓN, pero quisiera compartir con vosotras especialmente la COMPASIÓN, dada la situación en que nos encontramos como humanidad en estos tiempos de pandemia.

            Santo Domingo, desde su infancia creció en él la compasión, de manera que concentraba en sí mismo, las miserias de los demás. Sentía un gran amor por los pobres y necesitados, como presencia de Cristo en cada uno de ellos. Todas sabemos muy bien la gran hambruna que sobrevino en Palencia, cuando él era estudiante allí.  Él se compadeció profundamente de los pobres y les entregó todo lo que tenía, incluso lo que más apreciaba, sus libros. Más dramática, es esa otra escena de su vida en la que tiene intención de venderse como esclavo, cuando ya no tenía otra cosa que vender. Por todo ello sufrió incomprensión y criticas, a las que él contestaba con amabilidad y paz: “No puede ser que Cristo sufra hambre en los pobres mientras yo guarde en mi casa algo con lo cual pueda socorrerlos”. En verdad podemos decir que Domingo fue pobre con los pobres y por los pobres. Es esta una faceta que seguro que interpela nuestra vida.  Junto a nosotras existe, hoy también, la pobreza de tantas personas y familias, que, por la situación económica actual, lo están pasando realmente mal; estas situaciones, ¿interpelan nuestra sensibilidad, nuestra solidaridad y nuestra caridad? 

Creo que debería ser una llamada urgente al desprendimiento de lo nuestro para compartirlo con los más necesitados.

            Estamos viendo como el mundo a consecuencia de esta pandemia, está hoy muy necesitado de misericordia y compasión en todos sentidos. Las penosas urgencias de muchos hacen necesaria nuestra compasión, que implica un compromiso real con todos nuestros hermanos sufrientes, para caminar hacia un mundo cada vez más solidario.

            Hermanas como Dominicas estamos convocadas a trabajar para conseguir un mundo más humano y fraterno. Miremos al modelo de la primera comunidad cristiana, cómo estaba edificada sobre la oración, la lectura de las Escrituras, la fracción del pan y el compartir de todos los que tenían bienes, para no abandonar a nadie en necesidad (cf. He, 2, 42-45). Pidamos al Señor que aumente nuestra FE, así fortalecerá nuestra ESPERANZA y aumentará nuestra CARIDAD.

Noticias de la Curia – Agosto 2020

Cada época tiene su encanto y desescanto y como cada uno es hijo de su época, ello nos lleva a decir la frase tan sabida de “en mi época” “en mi tiempo” “antes” y valoramos lo que hemos vivido, pero los que no han vivido “esa época, o tiempo o ese antes” pues no lo comprenden. Con lo cual los que vivimos en la “época actual” aunque no comprendamos a los nacidos en ella, tenemos que ser conscientes de que tenemos que ser nosotros las que les tenemos que entender y no esperar a que ellos nos entiendan a nosotros. Aunque la fusión de las dos “épocas” y “tiempos” sería lo ideal.

And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?”
Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world,when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
«En verdad os digo que difícilmente entrará un rico en el reino de los cielos. Lo repito: más fácil le es a un camello pasar por el ojo de una aguja, que a un rico entrar en el reino de los cielos».
Al oírlo, los discípulos dijeron espantados:
«Entonces, ¿quién puede salvarse?».
Jesús se les quedó mirando y les dijo:
«Es imposible para los hombres, pero Dios lo puede todo».
Entonces dijo Pedro a Jesús:
«Ya ves, nosotros lo hemos dejado todo y te hemos seguido; ¿qué nos va a tocar?».
Jesús les dijo:
«En verdad os digo: cuando llegue la renovación y el Hijo del hombre se siente en el trono de su gloria, también vosotros, los que me habéis seguido, os sentaréis en doce tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.
Todo el que por mí deja casa, hermanos o hermanas, padre o madre, hijos o tierras, recibirá cien veces más y heredará la vida eterna.
Pero muchos primeros serán últimos y muchos últimos primeros».

And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

En aquel tiempo, se acercó uno a Jesús y le preguntó:
«Maestro, ¿qué tengo que hacer de bueno para obtener la vida eterna?».
Jesús le contestó:
«¿Por qué me preguntas qué es bueno? Uno solo es Bueno. Mira, si quieres entrar en la vida, guarda los mandamientos».
Él le preguntó:
«¿Cuáles?».
Jesús le contesto:
«No matarás, no cometerás adulterio, no robarás, no darás falso testimonio, honra a tu padre y a tu madre, y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo».
El joven le dijo:
«Todo eso lo he cumplido. ¿Qué me falta?».
Jesús le contestó:
«Si quieres ser perfecto, anda, vende tus bienes, da el dinero a los pobres —así tendrás un tesoro en el cielo— y luego ven y sígueme».
Al oír esto, el joven se fue triste, porque era muy rico.
