Information

“Our mission is to be carriers of the Word and messengers of the Truth”.

The congregation of Missionary Nuns of Saint Dominic has been present in Chile since the mid sixteenth century.

It is thanks to this congregation and to the request of Father Manuel Ferrero that in May of 1970 our Institute reaches Chile. After an initial short stay in the south, in the small village of Frutillar Alto, (X region) a community was established in Santiago, Chile at the School of Santa Teresita, where the nuns worked for years as teachers and spiritual guides. This delegation has many varied apostolates and contributes considerably to the well-being of the community

This community runs a university residence in Valparaiso for girls from the school who are promising students but whose families have no financial means to pay for their education.

There is also a sister who works in a school on the outskirts of the city who is making great efforts to reinsert into society those students who have fallen by the wayside.

This is a school with more than 800 students and with long waiting lists, whose prestige extends throughout and beyond the region. More than 220 girls study here free of charge, whils youngest do so at a very reduced cost. School meals are free for 70 students, and others may heat up food brought from home. There is assistance for the younger children, not only in seating them, but also in helping them to eat correctly. In addition to the education of students, different  apostolates are provided: the training of teaching staff and carers, as well as catechism for children and adults, assistance for the elderly in a local nursing home, assistance for families, and also solidary campaigns wherever they are needed. We have kept in touch with some girls’ parents over the years, and have seen them receive not only Baptism and Confirmation, but also this year, preparation for Matrimony. There is also a boarding school for students who live far away, and this provides them accomodation from Monday to Friday.

The Community also give Holy Communion to different groups of people in the parish such as the elderly and the sick, and attends to the liturgy in the parish of Pencalhue, whilst helping needy families, some of whom are connected to the school, and others with no connection.

The sisters in this community, with some secular help, devote themselves to the Parishes and to the apostolates needed within them: catechism for first communion and confirmation, catechism for adults, catechism to prepare christenings and marriages, assistance to young people, visits to the sick, and attention to all the needs which may arise throughout the Parish. They are in charge of coordinating all these apostolates, and of the different Chapels.

In addition, they run a polyclinic where they attend to various medical specialities that are free of charge for needy parishioners. They also run a solidarian dining hall, where some 50 people are given free meals every day.
